As the title says it, here I am planning to discuss about the condition of the roads in Romania.

A lot of things are heard about the Romanian roads. Some things are not very flattering, and quite a few people are interested in finding out the condition of a road or another. So here it is…my own observations of the roads I have been traveling on lately.

Feel free to suggest information of your own regarding this topic.

DN 57 A: Pojejena - Socol (2 lane road)(), observed on 19th october 2008: The road has no potholes, and the surface is ok. It is narrow though, so you should treat it more as a side road and don’t overdoit with the speed.

DN 57: Orsova - Moldova Veche - Pojejena (2 lane road)(), observed on 19th october 2008: The views on this road are just fantastic. These are the prettiest view of the Danube I ever saw. This however doesn’t change the fact that the road is under construction for about 50 km from Orsova towards Moldova Veche. They are still working on bridges and so on. Big portions of the road are already finished, and they are working hard and fast. I reccomend just driving slowly and enjoy the landscape.

DN 67 D - DN 6/E 70: Baile Herculane - Orsova (2 lane road)(), observed on 18th october 2008: They have been redoing this road quite nicely, but they are still working on it. I noticed at least 3 light stops due to this on this short portion of the road.

DN 67D: Baia de Arama - Baile Herculane (2 lane road)(), observed on 18th october 2008: Some portions of this road have been redone, while others have to be redone. Some potholes and differences in level are around. You should drive quite slow in the villages, because the street is narrow and people seem to make a habit by standing on the road. Despite all this, the road is truly beautiful with amazing views of the mountains in the Domogled - Valea Cernei National Park.

DJ 670: Baia de Arama - Ponoarele (2 lane road)(), observed on 18th october 2008: This road enters my category of really bad roads I have drove on in Romania. I am assuming they tried to prepare it for being redone and now it is just filled with small differences in level that makes your car tremble. Again it is worth being on it due to the Gods Bridge and Cave, and 2 other impressive reservations.

DN 67D: Targu Jiu - Baia de Arama (2 lane road)(), observed on 18th october 2008: The road condition is quite good, and no serious problems have been noticed on it.

E 79/DN 66: Targu Jiu - Bumbesti Jiu (2 lane road)(), observed on 18th october 2008: The road has potholes and differences in level. Needs to be redone.

DJ 683: Zavoi - Poiana Marului (Caras-Severin county)(2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: The road is a bit of an adventure. There are potholes and differences in level. Drive carefully.

DJ 687 - E 68/DN 7: Hunedoara - Deva (2-4 lane road)(), observed in october 2008: The road has recently been redone and it is very nice.

DJ 687A: Hunedoara - Hateg (2 lane)(), observed in october 2008: The road is in good condition, maybe 1 or 2 minor potholes. Enjoy the landscape over the majestic Retezat Mountains.

E 79/DN 66: Simeria - Hateg (2 lane road)(), observed on 12th october 2008: They have been working on this road for about 2 years, and still it is not finished. You will find potholes, differences in level, but it is drivable, so don’t get scared.

E 68/DN 7: Sebes - Orastie - Simeria (2 lane road)(), observed on 12th october 2008: The road is good, and has recently been redone. It is not finished to be marked in some areas and road works are still being done at the exit of Orastie (be aware that during the week, some serious traffic jams happen due to this 100 meters of road being redone).

E68/E81/DN1/DN7: Sibiu - Miercurea Sibiului - Sebes (2-3 lane road)(), observed on 12th october 2008: The road is good with the exception of some road works being done between Sibiu and Medias after Saliste, and a serious difference in level before Apoldu de Sus.

DN 15B: Poiana Largului - Targu Neamt (2 lane road)(), observed on 9th october 2008: The road is very good with the exception of about 10 km from Petru Voda village to Pluton, where the road crosses through the woods and road works are being done due to the land sliding that happened after the floods in august.

E578/DN 15: Toplita - Reghin (2 lane road)(), observed on 9th october 2008: This road has occasional small potholes, but it could really use a new layer of pavement, since it has so many differences in level that the car will really tremble from all connections.

E68/DN 7- DJ 107C - E81/DN1: Vantu de Jos (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: This is a shortcut for the ones trying to get to Alba Iulia and coming from Orastie. Even if the road signs say this road is closed, the truth is that the road was closed so that they could work in peace without the heavy traffic. Except about 200 meters in Vantu de Jos where they are still working on the road, this small distance is great. Smooth surface. This saves you about 9 km.

DJ 761 - DJ 107A: Soimus - Geoagiu (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: This road is in good condition, in some of the villages you should be more careful since there have been done some works that might have affected the road.

DJ 706A: Deva - Baita (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: This road could use some repairs, and some are being done. A very nice reservation is to be found on this road, enjoy!

DN 74: Brad - Campeni (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2007: At the time this road was not the best one, and road construction was taking place. If you have any updates, let me know.

E 79/ DN 76: Stei - Brad - Deva (2 lane road)(), observed on 29th june 2008: Occasional small potholes. Nothing else of major importance.

DN 75: Turda - Campeni - Garda de Sus - Stei (2 lane road)(), observed in 29th june 2008: This road is not a very good one. You have potholes, some road works etc…Over all I did like the landscape quite a bit, so do not get scared by the road. The maximum speed I drove on this road was 80 kmph.

DJ 106K: Sebes - Daia Romana (2 lane road)(), observed on 4th october 2008: Road works are being done at the exit from Sebes, but from there the road is quite nice, with a smooth surface.

DJ 106I - DJ 106L - DJ 107: Cunta - Drasov - Rosia de Recas - Blaj (2 lane road)() Observed on 4th October: This road is probably one that you will like to avoid, despite the pretty forest it passes through, and the lovely hills. From Cunta to Spring the road is surprisingly nice, but from Spring to Rosia de Recas the road is…well …filled with potholes, after this point is drivable.

E70/E85/ DN 5: Bucharest - Giurgiu (2/4 lane road)(), observed on 2nd september 2008: From Bucharest until Calugareni, the road could use some repavement (potholes/ differences in level), but from Calugareni until Giurgiu, the road is in perfect conditions, with 4 wide lanes.

E79/DN 66: Petrosani - Bumbesti Jiu (2 lane road)(), observed on 3rd october 2008: ATTENTION!!!!! This road has some limits imposed from 29th September until 15th November. The driving will be strictly forbidden every Wednesday between 10 am - 4 pm due to road repairs around Lainici. Please avoid.

DJ 208 G: Girov - Hanu Ancutei ( 2 lane road) (), observed on 11th october 2008: The road is in good condition. There are differences in level and some minor potholes.

DJ 138: Odorheiu Secuiesc - Gheorgheni (2 lane road)(), observed on 5th october 2008: This road is very good with 3 exceptions: the road is not finished for about 200 meters before the quarry, and in the villages Subcetate and Zetea it really needs to be redone.

DN 13A : Odorheiu Secuiesc - Praid (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: The road is in very good condition. My advice is, if you can take this road, do so. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and the villages you pass through have amazing wooden gates, and if you are lucky you will see the young people dressed in their traditional costumes.

DJ 137 - DN 13 C: Odorheiu Secuiesc - Cristuru Secuiesc - Vanatori (2 lane road)(), observed on 4th october 2008: The road is quite good until Cristuru Secuiesc, but between Cristuru Secuiesc and Vanatori it needs to be redone (some differences of level, and occasional potholes are around).

DN 79A: Varsand - Chisineu Cris (2 lane road)(), observed on 30 september 2008: Since the road is leading to the border crossing into  Hungary it has recently been redone. You might encounter some other works on this portion of the road.

E 671/ DN 79: Chisineu Cris - Arad (2 lane road)(), observed on 30 september 2008: This road is in good condition, without any major problems on it.

E 68/ DN 7: Arad - Deva (2 lane road)(), observed on 30 september 2008: This road is in good condition since they are redoing it. Please be careful since some road construction is still ungoing, and if you are driving by night, they might not be properly signalized. Also be careful since the road marking has not been finished yet.

DN 19: Sighetu Marmatiei - Livada (2 lane road)(), observed on 29th september 2008: This road has quite a few potholes and a lot of differences in level. The landscape is quite nice though, and if you pay attention to the road, you will not have any major problems.

E 81 / DN 19: Livada - Satu Mare (2 lane road)(), observed on 29th september 2008: This road has quite a few potholes and a lot of differences in level.

E 671/DN 19: Satu Mare - Carei - Valea lui Mihai (2 lane road)(): The road is an OK condition, but it could be much better. Watch the minor potholes.

E 82/ DN 22: Tulcea -Garvan (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: The road has been freshly done, so it is smooth, no potholes. Attention!! In the Somova locality they are working on a bridge, so there is one light stop.

DN 22E: Garvan - I.C. Bratianu - Galati Ferry (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: The road is in good condition, a few minor potholes and changes of level.

DN 25: Galati- Tecuci ()(2 lane road), observed in july 2008: The road is in good condition, a few minor potholes and changes of level. Be aware you wont be able to drive more than 50-60 kmph due to the close villages, carts and people on the road.

E 581 - DN 24: Tecuci - Vaslui(2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: The road is in good condition. Have not really noticed any potholes except in the cities.

E 581 - DN 24: Vaslui - Iasi (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: This portion of the road has quite a few differences of level and enough minor potholes. In some areas it is good, in others not so good.

E 58 - DN 28: Iasi - Targu Frumos (4 lane road)(), observed on 5th october 2008: Excellent condition of this 4 lane European road (highway). Watch out for the speed radars, there are plenty of them. ATTENTION!!! Road construction taking place in Valea Lupului village, traffic is going on 2 lanes only, and is going slow for the length of the construction.

E 583 - DN 28: Targu Frumos - Roman (4 lane road)(), observed on 5th october 2008: Excellent condition of this 4 lane European road.

DN 28 A: Targu Frumos - Pascani - Motca (2 lane road)(), observed 9 october 2008: Good condition. Occasional differences in level, few minor potholes. It could use a new layer of pavement. Do not stop in Motca village, there are gypsies that are too ” friendly” sometimes.

E 85 - DN 2: Roman - Falticeni (4/2 lane road)(), observed in June 2008: Very good condition.

E 85 - DN 2: Roman - Buzau ( 4 lane road)(), observed on 21st septmeber 2008: Very good condition, exception in the cities.

E 574 - DN 11: Bacau - Onesti (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Fairly ok, occasional potholes, differences in level, and a few places are ongoing road construction.

E 574 - DN 11: Onesti - Brasov (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Fairly ok, crossing the Oituz pass, mind the mountain road with its curves. After passing the mountains, mind the traffic radars.

DN 15 B: Motca- Targu Neamt (2 lane road)(), observed on 9 october 2008: Until reaching the E85/DN 2, the road could use a new layer of pavement, but overall it is ok. They are still working on reconstructing the bridge at the exit of Timisesti village over the Moldova river, so mind the lights installed there.

DN 15 B: Targu Neamt - Manastirea Neamt (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: Good condition until taking right on the small road leading to the monastery. From there, there are plenty of potholes and differences in level. Good thing it is only a few km.

DN 15 C: Targu Neamt - Piatra Neamt (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: Good condition, occasional differences in level, minor potholes.

DN 15 C: Targu Neamt - Vadu Moldovei (2 lane road)(), observed in 2007: The road was in good condition at the time. A lot of hills and valleys.

DN 15 C: Targu Neamt - Agapia Monastery (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: The road is in good condition until taking right towards the Agapia Monastery. From there you should mind the potholes, and drive with maximum 40 kmph

DN 15: Poiana Largului - Bicaz (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: This road has its potholes and differences in level from land sliding. Drive with caution.

DN 12 C: Bicaz - Gheorgheni (2 lane road)(), observed on 5th october 2008: This road had its potholes repaird in august 2008. I hope you enjoy the scenery.

DN 15: Toplita - Borsec - Poiana Largului (2 lane road)(), observed on 9th october 2008: The road at the exit from Toplita and inside the town is quite bad, with potholes, differences of level and road works done at the bridge right at the exit towards Borsec. From this point forward the road is very nice and smooth, with beautiful landscape. The good news even is that they finished working at the bridge at the tail of the Izvorul Muntelui Lake (Bicaz Lake), at which they have worked for about 1 year.

DN 15: Bicaz - Piatra Neamt (2 lane road)(), observed on 11th october 2008: The road is good with minor potholes and after bicaz some minor road work is being done. At the entrance in Piatra Neamt the road could do with some repairs.

DN 15D: Piatra Neamt - Roman (2 lane road)(), observed on 1st august 2008: The road is in good condition. Very rare small potholes and a few differences of level, nothing serious.

DN 13B: Gheorgheni - Praid (2 lane road)(), observed on 5th october 2008: The road is in very good condition, with the exception of Gheorgheni streets. Mind the curves.

DN 13A: Praid - Sovata - Balauseri (2 lane road)(), observed in 5th october 2008: The road is in very good condition. Haven’t notice any problems.

DN 13 A: Miercurea Ciuc - Odorheiu Secuiesc (2 lane road)(), observed on 4th october 2008: This road is in a perfect condition, with a scenery that will take your breath away. Enjoy the drive!

DJ 142: Balauseri - Tarnaveni - Blaj (2 lane road)(), observed on 1st august 2008: Some serious problems on this road. Plenty of big potholes, differences in level, some road construction. I reccomend you avoid it if possible. For those wanting to see “Cetatea de Balta Fortress”, don’t bother, it is private property and can’t be visited :P.

DN 14B: Blaj - Teius (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: This road is drivable. Occasional potholes.

DN 14 B: Blaj - Copsa Mica (2 lane road)(), observed on 4th October 2008: This road is ok with the exception of some road works being done in Valea Lunga at the crossing of train tracks and the bridge over the Valea Lunga river and at the bridge at the cross roads towards Seica Mica. Minor potholes are around.

DN 14: Sighisoara - Medias - Sibiu (2 lane road)(), observed on 11th october 2008: This road is in good condition. Haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary (maybe some minor potholes after Medias). Take some time to visit the wonderful fortresses and churches on the way.

DJ 106B: Cristian - Ocna Sibiului - Hasag (2 lane road)(), observed on 12th october 2008: Before reaching Cristian, take a right when the sign tells you to, for Ocna Sibiului. This road has seen better days, but is drivable and some portions of the road have been redone.

DJ 107B: Slimnic - Mandra (2 lane road)(), observed on 12th october 2008: Surprising as it is for such a secondary road, this one is drivable and in a condition much better than expected. Though there are 3 major potholes that you should be aware of and drive carefully.

DJ 106A: Sibiu - Rasinari - Paltinis (2 lane road)(), observed in march 2008: From Sibiu to Rasinari, you will pass Dumbrava forest, and the road is quite good until you exit Rasinari. From there, there are portions of the road that have some potholes. The landscape is worth it though.

DJ 106D - DJ 106C: Sibiu - Cisnadioara - Cisnadie - Sibiu ( 2 lane road)(), observed in march 2008: This road is in good condition and I did not notice anything wrong with it.

DJ 106 D - E 68-81 (DN 1 - 7): Cisnadioara - Cisnadie - Sibiu (2 lane road (), observed in march 2008: The road is good, with no serious problems.

E 68 / DN 1: Brasov - Fagaras - Sibiu (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: This road is on ongoing construction, but, with the exception of the delays and the traffic  due to the works, it is in good condition for driving. Drive with care though. ATTENTION!!! Road constructions taking place.

DN 73A: Sercaia - Zarnesti - Rasnov (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: Drive with care, there are several potholes, and the road could use some attention, but it is drivable nonetheless.

DJ 104B - DJ 106: Fagaras - Soars - Bradeni - Apold - Sighisoara (2 lane road)(), observed in january 2008: If you are up for off-roading, than this is the road for you. It is rarely asphalted in a few villages with plenty of potholes, but for about 20-30 km, there is only gravel. ATTENTION!!! To be avoided.

E 60/DN 13: Brasov - Sighisoara (2 lane road)(), observed in march 2008: The road is in perfect condition. Maybe one or two differences of level.

DJ 104: Rupea - Dacia - Viscri - Bunesti (2 lane road)(), observed in march 2008: From Rupea to Dacia, the road has enough potholes, while from Dacia to Viscri and Bunesti, only has gravel. It is drivable, and it should not scare you if you want to visit Viscri…IT IS WORTH IT.

E 574/DN11 - DN 10: Brasov - Harman - Prejmer (), observed in june 2008: From Brasov until you reach the bridge pointing to Buzau, the road could use some repairs…it has been cement plaques since Ceausescu’s time. Once you go on the bridge the road is perfect.

DN 1E: Brasov - Poiana Brasov - Rasnov (2 lane road)(), observed in june 2008: The road is very good condition, nothing to report here, except enjoy the scenery, and be careful in winter.

E 60/DN 1: Bucharest - Ploiesti - Campina - Sinaia - Predeal - Brasov (4/2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: This road is in perfect condition from Bucharest to Ploiesti (with the exception of the belt around Ploiesti which has plenty of potholes) , and is 4 lane until Breaza and 2 from there until you reach Brasov. Ocassional road works happen. Be careful in weekend, the traffic is very heavy, so you might want to avoid this road, so you do not get stuck in traffic.

DN 73 A: Predeal - Rasnov  (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: The road is good, occasional potholes, and could require some repairs. No major problems.

E 574/DN 73: Brasov - Rasnov- Bran - Campulung Muscel (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: This road requires some repairs. Potholes are present, as well differences of level.

DN 73C: Campulung Muscel - Curtea de Arges (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: Serious land slidings ocurred here. The road is again cemented since Ceausescu’s time, for a good part of the road. Plenty of potholes. It is drivable…with CARE.

DN 73C - E81/DN 7: Curtea de Arges - Ramnicu Valcea (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: The road is drivable, and the landslidings that occured in 2006 have been fixed. Some minor potholes can be found here and there. Ah! ignore the sign where it says the road is closed because they just forgot to take the sign down.

DN 7C: Curtea de Arges - Balea Lake (Transfagarasan) - Cartisoara (2 lane road)(), observed in july 2008: During the winter months (october to end of june) this road is closed from Capra Cabin to Balea Waterfall Cabin, due to serious snow and danger of avalanches. When this road is open, on the side of the Vidraru lake, it could use some repairs (plenty of potholes), from Capra Cabin until Cartisoara, the road is in very good condition considering…Despite the bad things…this is one road I will always do with pleasure as often as I can…GIVE IT A GO. TRANSFAGARASAN, NEWS ON 8 OCTOBER 2008: IT SNOWED IN FAGARASI MOUNTAINS, AND THE ROAD IS NOT EASILY ACCESIBLE. IF YOU DO GO ON THIS ROAD, TAKE PROPER EQUIPMENT. AUTHORITIES SAY THOUGH THAT THE ROAD WILL BE OK NEXT WEEK.

E 81/DN 7: Ramnicu Valcea - Sibiu (2/4 lane road)( ), observed in july 2008: This road is in a good condition, but the traffic can be heavy at times. There is the possibility of rock sliding, but the Olt valley is beautiful.

DN 67: Ramnicu Valcea - Targu Jiu (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: The road is in good condition. Nothing serious to report.

E 79/DN 66: Bumbesti Jiu - Petrosani (2 lane road)(), observed in septmeber 2008: This road has occasional potholes especially in the Jiu gorges, differences in level and rock sliding. At Lainici there is a temporary bridge over the Jiu river. The road is drivable, and some sights are worth it.

DN 7A: Petrosani - Brezoi (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: Until you have reached Voineasa prepare yourself for some serious potholes and bad road, especially at the Groapa Seaca pass, where there is only gravel. The only good thing about this road are the wonderful sights of the Parang mountains and Vidra lake. I can’t guarantee that the Pass is drivable in winter.

E 79/DN 66: Petrosani - Hateg (2 lane road)(), observed on 3rd october 2008: Road construction is occuring on this road, some portions of the road will require careful driving. Bridges are being worked on, traffic lights are to be found, and in some spots traffic occurs on a single lane. Nonetheless, the road is in good shape.

DJ 667A: Ohaba de sub Piatra - Nucsoara (2 lane road)(), observed on 3rd october 2008: This small road has some potholes but nothing too serious. Some works are being done on the side of the road. This is also one of the entries in the Retezat National Park and the place where the Administration of the park is to be found.

DJ 686 - DJ 685: Santamaria Orlea - Rau de Mori - Gura Apelor Lake - Gura Bucurei (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Until you reach the Lake, you will have some potholes on the way, so be more careful from Gura Zlata Cabin onward. From the Lake, you will have to cross the barrier( a tax is required), and from there the road is forestry, but with gravel. Quite good considering… In winter the road is closed due to the heavy snow. DO NOT MAKE FIRES OR THROW TRASH ON THE RETEZAT NATIONAL PARK TERRITORY…PROTECT THE NATURE.

DN 68: Hateg - Caransebes (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Road in perfect condition. Mind the wild animals crossing the road at night.

E 70/DN 6: Caransebes - Lugoj (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Ocassional small potholes. Nothing serious. I believe some road works have started. If anybody has information on this, let me know.

E 70/DN 6: Lugoj - Timisoara (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: Road under construction. Expect traffic on a single lane and light stops.

DJ 592: Lugoj - Buzias - Timisoara (2 lane road)(), observed in august 2008: The road is in good condition. Expect differences in level, and a few minor potholes. This is a good alternative to Lugoj - Timisoara on E 70.

E 70/DN 6: Caransebes - Orsova (2 lane road)(), observed on 20th october 2008: This road is still under construction but big parts of it are finished. My estimate is that about 20 km of road are pretty much requiring at least 1 hour of your time, since there are many light stops, traffic is done on a single lane, and the road surface is very bad. If you do not mind the dust on the car and the slow traffic than I guess it is ok, but if you do…than wait until the road it is finished, my guess next year :).

DJ 603 : Comana - Mihai Bravu (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: The road is in a horrible state, really to be avoided if possible…do not be fooled by the map…simply horible.

DN 5 A: Adunatii Copaceni - Comana (2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: This portion of the road is in good condition without any shocking events, but…the road in Comana village is the worse I have ever seen anywhere. Forestry roads were a better choice than driving on the actual street.

Calugareni - Branistari - Budeni - Comana ( Giurgiu County) ( 2 lane road)(), observed in september 2008: Please pay attention! In Calugareni there will be a markage sending you this way to Comana. DO NOT TAKE THIS ROAD!!!! The road is not paved, and this is not all, the differences in level or the potholes…well you can actually hide a car in them, and I am not joking here. AVOID!

Welcome to the EARomania Blog. For the curious ones, my name is Gabriela and I am the one who will do the ramblings around here, mostly about Romania, but not only.
I assume you are wondering, WHAT IS EARomania? EARomania is the short name from Everything About Romania, a website which is meant to become the most informative and complete Guide Online for Romania.
